The Governors Next Step for Youth Initiative is a
comprehensive prevention effort designed to prevent and reduce the use of
marijuana, other illicit drugs, alcohol, and tobacco by North Carolina
youth.
As of November 22, 2006, there were 36 drug courts in existence or
being planned in North Carolina. Twenty-seven drug courts had been operating
for more than 2 years, 6 had recently been implemented and 3 were being planned
at that time. More than 40% of the Federally-sentenced drug cases involved
crack cocaine.
During 2006, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) reported
making 293 arrests for drug violations in North Carolina. During 2005, there
were 21,612 arrests for marijuana possession in North Carolina.
