The New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse
Services (OASAS) has the mission to improve the lives of New Yorkers by
ensuring quality prevention and treatment services for chemical dependence and
compulsive gambling and by promoting recovery from addiction.
As of November 22, 2006, there were 184 drug courts in existence
or being planned in New York. There were 129 drug courts which had been
operating for more than 2 years, 15 which had recently been implemented and 40
were being planned at that time. During 2006, approximately 40% of the
Federally-sentenced defendants in New York had committed drug offenses.
During 2006, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) reported
making 2,107 arrests for drug violations in New York. There were 42,097 adult
arrests in New York for felony drug violations during 2006.
