The Governor’s Commission for a Drug-Free Indiana was created in 1989 to develop a comprehensive statewide approach to alcohol and other drug problems. The Commission assists local communities in the development of community plans to address substance abuse issues.

As of April 16, 2007, there were 37 drug courts in existence or being planned in Indiana. Twenty-three drug courts had been operating for at least two years, 5 had recently been implemented and another 9 were being planned at that time. More than 30% of the Federal drug offenses involved crack cocaine.

During 2006, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) made 422 arrests for drug violations in Indiana. There were 19,633 arrests for drug abuse violations in Indiana during 2006.
