An initiative of the Hawaii Lt. Governors Office, the
mission of the Hawaii Drug Control Plan is to reduce harm to the community by
responding to the prevention, treatment and law enforcement needs associated
with illicit drug use, underage drinking and drug distribution.
As of November 22, 2006, there were 9 drug courts in existence or
being planned in Hawaii. Seven drug courts had been operating for more than 2
years, 2 had recently been implemented and 1 was being planned at that time.
During 2006, more than half of the Federally-sentenced defendants in Hawaii had
committed drug offenses and over 80% of those involved methamphetamine.
During 2006, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) reported
making 120 arrests for drug violations in Hawaii.
